The commission has responsibility for preserving public health, safety and general welfare and extending the principles of sound planning, zoning and development to unorganized and deorganized townships of the State. Commission members must be familiar with the needs and issues affecting the commission's jurisdiction. Members serve 4-year terms and may not be state employees. Dunn of Rome as the Adjutant General - Commissioner of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management The Adjutant General who also serves as the Commissioner of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management must have attained the federally recognized rank of Colonel in the Maine National Guard, but may not hold a grade above major general. The Adjutant General is responsible for administering the Department and for operating and maintaining military facilities necessary to comply with State and Federal law.
